Planning with Files

The skill
Planning with files keeps an agent's plan, findings and progress in markdown files on disk, so long multi-step tasks survive context loss and compaction.
Only when you ask.
The habit
Long tasks finish, nothing forgotten.

When does it start? How does it check its work? What does it remember?
Stops when check-complete.sh reports all phases complete, or after 3 failed attempts on one error.
The agent resolves the plan folder with scripts/resolve-plan-dir.sh and reads the three planning files.
It runs git diff --stat to spot work not yet written to the plan.
It works on the in_progress phase and saves findings to findings.md after every two lookups.
It writes each error to the plan and never repeats the same failed action.
It marks finished phases complete and adds a progress.md entry.
It runs scripts/check-complete.sh to see if all phases are done.
After three failed attempts on one error, it explains what it tried and asks you for guidance.
It writes only in its own folder and asks you before anything goes out.
Read both lists. If the left one sounds like you, the Planning with Files skill helps.
The plugin install adds /plan-loop and /plan-goal. A skill-only install can follow the manual fallback with Claude Code's own /loop.
Yes. Give each task its own PLAN_ID from scripts/init-session.sh, or use separate worktrees.
Only if you ask. session-catchup.py --metadata gives counts; --replay needs your explicit approval.
Copy the prompt at the top into your agent. It installs the skill from OthmanAdi/planning-with-files and sets up the habit. Or run npx skills add OthmanAdi/planning-with-files --skill planning-with-files.
