The skill

Only when you ask.

The habit

Automations use native Home Assistant features.

How the habit works.
You don't have to.

Three questionsWhen does it start? How does it check its work? What does it remember?

One run, step by step.
Then it stops.

Stop ruleStops after five automations per run; backups, restores and upgrades always need a fresh yes.

  1. 01

    Read the version

Get version from GET /api/config or Settings, About, since features depend on the release.

  2. 02

    Gate refactors

For renames or restructures, follow the safe-refactoring reference before any change.

  3. 03

    Check triggers

Prefer purpose-specific triggers, then generic native ones, before any template.

  4. 04

    Check helpers and mode

Swap template sensors for built-in helpers and pick the right automation mode.

  5. 05

    Propose fixes

Show the user each exact change and wait for their OK before saving.

  6. 06

    Apply and check

Save through the config API or UI, then run the configuration check and reload.

  7. 07

    Note the review

Record which automations were fixed and which wait.

What it may do.
Nothing more.

Safe by defaultIt writes only in its own folder and asks you before anything goes out.

Is it for you?
Use it when it fits.

Quick checkRead both lists. If the left one sounds like you, the Home Assistant Best Practices skill helps.

Use it when

  • ✓ You create or edit automations
  • ✓ You rename entities or devices
  • ✓ You plan a backup restore or upgrade

Skip it when

  • – You do not run Home Assistant
  • – You only browse dashboards

Questions

Home Assistant Best Practices skill, answered.

Will it edit .storage files?

No. The skill treats .storage as Home Assistant's internal state and uses the API instead.

Can it restore a backup on its own?

No. Restoring, deleting backups or upgrading Core or the OS always needs your explicit confirmation.

Why not templates?

The skill says templates skip validation and can fail silently, so native options come first.
